Saddleback is run under the direction of Pastor Rick Warren, who had this to say about prop 8: "If you believe what the Bible says about marriage, you need to support Proposition 8. We should not let 2 percent of the population change the definition of marriage." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/randall-balmer/rick-warren-and-prop-8_b_137908.html
Please use caution before volunteering for organizations that may not be a safe environment for the LGBT community.

I live in South Orange County and would NEVER volunteer for anything associated with Sattleback Church and I discourage everyone from volunteering here 9  out of 17 found this valuable. Do you?

Please do your research. The Saddleback Outreach is now the South County Outreach and has nothing to do with Saddleback Church. Nothing in SCO's history is associated with Pastor Warren or his church. 8  out of 10 found this valuable. Do you?

wow. if what you say is true, then it sounds like they need to consider changing their name to avoid that continued confusion... 2  out of 4 found this valuable. Do you?

so, what is south county outreach's history? we know what pastor rick warren at saddleback CHURCH believes and that isn't a healthy environment for the LGBT community. how about south county outreach? from my research, it seems that it might be a welcoming environment, once we get past the confusion of mixing the two. it sounds like a great place with really excellent, positive programs, helping people get along and get better. i'd like to volunteer there, if i were in the area.

Pretty funny, considering Jesus only really preached to "love thy neighbor," huh?
Yes, I'm Christian; yes, I support GLBT rights; YES, I think using religion as a reason to hate is ABSOLUTE RUBBISH. Ban idiocy!

You know how you aren't supposed to prejudge things or people - just because they sound a little off to you?

Take a breath and do some research....

History - South County Outreach (SCO)
(Formerly Saddleback Community Outreach)

In 1989, SCO was founded as a non-profit, non-sectarian organization providing emergency assistance to South Orange County residents. SCO’s catchment area includes all the south county cities from Irvine to San Clemente.

SCO was founded by Mr. Ray Havert. Ray, with the aid of volunteers, conducted food drives and opened a food pantry to assist families and seniors in need.

SCO’s mission: “SCO continues to be a premier provider of vital services and assistance to low income families, seniors and individuals, meeting the needs of the hungry and homeless in South Orange County.”
In the first year of operation SCO assisted over 1500 families. The next year the number of families doubled. In 1991, in order to meet this increasing demand, SCO relocated to a facility with a warehouse and office space. We also expanded our emergency services to include rental and utility assistance.

Yeah there are a lot of things called Saddleback in South Orange County...schools, hospitals, parks, churches, organizations...and not all involve hate mongers. It can be tough to tell the good guys from the bad.

How annoying for SCO to have to change names because a CHURCH gave "Saddleback" a bad name !!!!!

As we all know, the old "the Bible says it" argument is simplistic & disingenuous. The Bible contains injunctions against non-kosher food, but you don't see Rick Warren refusing to eat cheeseburgers, now do you ?! [Please, correct me if I'm wrong!]

There is a pretty sizable chunk of South Orange County known as "SADDLEBACK" (named after a little mountain range here). Rick Warren has nothing to do with the majority of businesses called "Saddleback". As far as I know his only affiliation is with his own church which is, coincidentally, also located in that area and known as Saddleback Church. I'm a former member of his church and a straight Christian woman who supports LGBT rights. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?
